- Virtual Ripple Tank - Download "Zip archive of this applet". Open the zip file and open the "ripple.jar" file (requires Java to be installed on your computer).
- Wave PPT presentation
- Making waves on paper
- Gummy bear wave machine
- Instructions: http://www.instructables.com/id/Candy-Wave-Machine/
- Alternative/supplement - PhET wave simulator
- Video about the wave machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjPFW6gftas
- Dean Baird's video with instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCbf9_4xN_E
- Questions and things to point out
- What's the medium?
- Medium is not transferred
- Transverse or longitudinal wave?
- What direction does the medium vibrate relative to the direction of the wave?
- How do you change the wave speed? (Speed does not change, must change medium)
- Show constructive and destructive interference (kind-of)
- Calculate the wave velocity
- Make standing waves (and calculate the velocity using velocity = wavelength * frequency)
- For a 3-meter long machine with dots spaced 4cm apart, you need 75 skewers, 150 dots (~55 dots per box)
- Target sells Dots candies for $1/box (~55 Dots/box)
